Many people learn to rock climb these days in climbing walls or join climbing clubs and spend all of the time following outdoor rock climbs. The step from leading on a climbing wall or following climbs to leading on leader placed protection is a big one.

This is why at Ascent Training we have courses in this skill acquisition or a tailor made package that can be put together over an agreed time period to teach you to lead on leader placed protection and coach you to lead VS or above.

Learning to lead (3 days)

This course is designed for climbers who have done some climbing, maybe just seconding or for those who have experienced leading but would like to learn this new dimension of the sport from a highly experienced, fully qualified rock climbing instructor.

Over the first two days all the fundamentals of leading are covered. You will spend lots of time leading routes, placing protection and setting up belays. The third optional day allows you to consolidate these skills under our excellent instruction.

Tailor made coaching courses

These courses are designed to coach you as a climber to improve your climbing. An initial assessment of your climbing will be made and a discussion to determine your aims and objectives and from there an action plan can be put together.

Below is an example of an action plan:

James Wood has been climbing at a climbing wall for a winter and has led a number of grade 5 climbs. He has joined his local climbing club and has been taken up a number of climbs from VD to severe. His aim is to be able to comfortably lead VS on leader placed protection.

• A two day learning to lead course
• Two days coaching skills - bouldering, use of climbing walls and sport climbing
• Set a number of routes for James to lead and follow over a period decided upon.
• A further assessment in the improvement of his climbing ability after these routes have been undertaken to decide what more needs to be done.
• Further coaching including psychological skills which are so important.

Coaching courses are run by highly experienced and qualified climbers who climb extremely well.

There is not a fixed price for this course as all climbers will have different aims. After an initial day of climbing and discussion, which costs £150, an action plan will be put together and a price determined.
