Outdoor education courses

Learning Outside the Classroom.

A major part of Ascent Training's work is the delivery of tailor made outdoor education courses for young people. These are of exceptional value and quality and all of our clients return year after year.aala.jpg

Paul Platt and all of the staff working for Ascent Training have been working in Outdoor Centres' for many years and are extremely experienced in the delivery of programs for key stages 2, 3 and 4.

Ascent Training has an AALS license which can be confirmed by contacting them on 029 2075 5715. Our license covers us to run a whole range of activities including, rock climbing, caving, water sports and hillwalking.

church_beck_dunnington_schoolCopies of our risk assessments, AALS license and other relevant documents can be found here.

Many of our courses are run at Holly How YHA  in Coniston but we can travel anywhere in the UK (link is to our sister company Apex Training which delivers ML courses at Holly How).

Programmes for young people are tailor made to suit your requirements and we are happy to meet up to discuss this if that is preferred.

To give you an idea of a programme that is possible however please click this link.

Prices for  activities are so variable it is best not to place here. Inevitably a group of ten undertaking one day of activity will be charged more per head than a group of 40 undertaking a five day residential.

Importantly we are not charging over the odds and the fact that groups are returning year after year, with very little (if any) rise in price, is testament to this.

The YHA has a bursary scheme that schools can tap into, please contact us for details.

So what are our programs all about? The section below gives a little more detail of our beliefs and aspirations.

Outdoor Education

This focuses on personal development through responsible use of the environment and interaction with others. It involves the acquisition of knowledge, values and skills relating to self, others and the environment.

Most of the activities we offer fall into one or more of the following categories:

  • adventure in the outdoors
  • personal and social skills
  • the environment.

A choice of Activity Programmes will be offered to meet the desired learning goals and take account of the students’ present skills and past experience.

A GCSE PE course in rock climbing is also available at Holly How. Please contact us for details.

Adventure Education

brocken_spectre_old_man.jpgOur adventure activities are both physically and mentally challenging and provide an opportunity to promote aspects of personal development such as self-confidence, decision making, independence and determination. Challenging and adventurous activities develop skills that can lead to a lifelong involvement in worthwhile leisure pursuits and change influence a positive development in a child's future. It is within the context of these activities that students are encouraged to develop a responsible attitude towards personal and group safety.abseilling.jpg

Adventurous activities encourage young people to make decisions and evaluate risk. Every child matters fits in extremely well with the different activities and the residential experience. This residential experience is fundamental in the courses we run - living together, sharing chores, developing independence, time-keeping and being responsible for themselves and others are all extremely important in our adult lives and residential outdoor activity courses are fantastic at enhancing these skills.

Please contact us for further information and ideas of programmes for your school/youth group visit.

Risk assessments, working practise documents, booking forms and our AALA license can all be downloaded from here. If there are any questions regarding these please do not hesitate to contact us. They are reviewed each year or in between if we deem necessary.

Every Child Matters - Ok maybe a little old school but it is stil important to a childs development. What is fantastic about Outdoor Education is we can link this to so many of the outdoor activities and/or the residential experience as seen below.

Ascent training provided the 40 year 7 and 8 students from All Saints School, with an amazing variety of experiences. It allowed them to develop self confidence, team work and motivation and have a week full of fun. The staff of Ascent were brilliant! The students are keen to return!

I would like to thank Paul and Phil at Ascent training for making our week in Coniston amazing! All 40 of our students thoroughly enjoyed themselves! Each day was different and provided the staff and students with lots of exciting opportunities that they will remember!
    Thank you :-)

Dear Paul and all the team,
Thank you for a wonderful week with the usual fantastic, high quality experience for all our young people. You were so well organised and had given great care to making this a really exciting adventure with plenty of great physical challenges and "wow" moments. I will certainly be booking up again and a lot of staff are asking to come next time.

We have worked with Paul Platt and Ascent training to provide an Activity for or Year 6 children during an annually arranged residential visit to Ingleton Youth Hostel. Children have experienced a roundabout of activities which have included, caving, climbing and abseiling, simple orienteering and problem solving. Paul and those working for him have been excellent with the children and extremely professional in everything they do. I cannot recommend him and Ascent training highly enough, Briliant all round and already confirmed a booking for next year's visit.

*Once again, fourth year, Paul and Ascent Training have given the kids at Dunnington Primary an experience not to be forgotten as we scrambled away up Church Beck in Coniston. I always feel they are very safe, whilst being challenged, given independence and most of all fun. I can't recommend Ascent Training highly enough.
