The aim of this page is to give visitors to the site an insight into the qualifications that exist in the UK. It is not easy to know what each award means and what the instructor can do. Hopefully it will also enable you to make a more informed decision on who to lead you in the mountains.

Mountain Leader Award

The Mountain Leader Award (ML) was established to promote the safe enjoyment of the hills and mountains. The scheme provides training and assessment in the technical and group management skills required by those who wish to lead groups in the mountains, hills and moorlands of the United Kingdom and Ireland, other than in winter conditions. It integrates experience, training, and assessment in a variety of testing conditions in mountainous country.

Single Pitch Award

The scheme is for those who are in a position of responsibility during single pitch rock climbing activities. It is primarily concerned with good practice, leading to the safe and quiet enjoyment of the activity. Completion of a training course alone, without taking an assessment course, is not a qualification in itself, although it may be of considerable benefit to the trainee.

Mountain Instructor Award

The scheme provides training and assessment in the skills required to teach, train and assess general mountaineering, rock climbing and related activities. The Mountain Instructor Award (Summer), known as the MIA, is for instructors working in summer conditions and covers multi-pitch rock climbing, scrambling and other mountaineering skills.

Holders of the MIA hold the ML award as described above.

Mountain Instructor Certificate

This award trains and assesses candidates in the skills required for instruction of mountaineering, both summer and winter, including snow, ice and rock climbing. It builds on the skills acquired in both the MIA and ML(W) awards; both of which candidates must hold to access the MIC scheme. The MIC is an extensively used professional award.

MIC holders hold the MIA and therefore the ML. These qualifications supersede the SPA award.

Holders of the MIA and MIC qualifications are able to join the Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI) and they are required to complete Mandatory CPD which shows a professional attitude and helps to keep members current.

Mountain Guides

IFMGA Mountain Guides are the most qualified and experienced professionals to lead people in the mountains with a training and assessment that takes many years and exceptional skills to achieve.

CAVING

The Cave Instructor Certificate is the only caving qualification that allows instructors to Guide in caves in the Uk and is accepted abroad when working with British clients.

Paul Platt holds the CIC award and is a member of the Association of Caving Instructors.

Staff qualifications at Ascent Training

So if you visit the above short films you now will know that only MIA & MIC holders and Mountain Guides are trained and assessed to lead clients on multi pitch climbs in the great outdoors.

Mountain Guides are trained and assessed to Guide. MIAs and MICs are trained and assessed to teach, assess and guiding plays are part in this process (this is especially evident for MICs as the need to move fast in winter is especially important).

Hopefully this has been very useful. Ascent Training staff that hold the MIA and MIC are extremely experienced and if you are after someone to lead you on extreme climbs then please contact us.
