Adventurous activities, including mountaineering and caving, have a certain element of risk associated with them. Ascent Training staff are there to manage these risks but cannot eliminate them completely. Our entire decision making is in the best interests of our clients. The Staff working on Ascent Training courses are all extremely competent and this is reflected in our high professional qualifications and many years of delivering these activities at a safe level.
In summer a day's rock climbing in the Lake District or caving in the Yorkshire Dales will cost £150 per day. With winter days being more demanding and generally longer the rate for a day is £165. Both these prices reflect the experience of your guide. Prices do not include hire of any specialist equipment such as ice axes and boots which can be arranged.
If your guided day involves a lot of travelling amendments to the above prices will be needed. Please contact Paul Platt in this case.
Guided days are priced assuming one to one. If you wish to increase the ratio to a maximum of one to two the prices go up to £175 in summer and £200 in winter.
However it should be stressed the quality of a guided day is far greater when the ratio is kept to one to one.
The price covers full instruction by a highly qualified professional mountaineering or caving instructor. Technical equipment such as ropes, helmets and harnesses are included in the price.
Some equipment such as Ice Axes on our winter courses will incur a small charge and needs to be arranged in advance.
Depending on course numbers transport may or may not be included. Please consider using your own vehicle. All vehicles Ascent Training staff use are covered by business insurance.
Accomodation is not included in any of the course prices unless stated. Please see the links section for options.
Personal accident insurance is not included in the price. Specialist insurer details are available on the links page.
We will require you to have adequate personal protective clothing for activities (such as warm clothes, water proofs etc). We can arrange for hire of these if our own some supplies are not available.
Specialist items such as ice axes, crampons and winter boots will incur a small hire charge. Please contact us as soon as possible so these can be booked.
With any medical condition it is essential that you inform Ascent Training of your requirements. Having a medical condition does not exclude you from taking part in adventurous activities, however please contact Ascent Training to discuss your condition before the course. We will then undertake what is necessary to enable you to participate fully.
Please contact us by email, telephone or letter to ensure the course you are interested in is not full. We then ask you to complete the booking form, which can be downloaded from the website, and forward this to us with a deposit, or if within 4 weeks of the start of the course the full course fee.
Firstly we recommend you contact us to find out where the course will be based; it would be a shame if you stay in Ambleside if the course is in Borrowdale! There is a link to accommodation which we are in the process of extending.
Yes they can, Ascent Training holds an A.A.L.S. license and therefore under 18's can undertake all activities. We regularly run outdoor education courses at Holly How YHA and elsewhere. Please see the schools page for more details.
Multi activity courses for families are also run at Holly How YHA and parents need to be present on these due to the accommodation regulations at the hostel.
All Ascent Training staff also have a vast amount of experience working with young people. Paul Platt has been working in Local Education Authority Centre's for twenty years.
All staff that work for Ascent Training are extremely sympathetic to the needs and concerns of the candidates on courses. It is not unusual to have a fear about heights or tight spaces and you will always be looked after. Please however inform your instructor of any concerns you may have. You will not be forced to do anything you don't wish to do.
The level of fitness you require very much depends upon the course you book on.
For example you would not have to be incredibly fit for a two day "Moving Out" course. However you should be able to climb comfortably indoors and feel you could spend two full days climbing outdoors. On the other hand someone booking on a five day winter course should be very fit. You should expect to climb/walk to the summit of 1000 metre peaks for five days, possibly in poor weather conditions.
Caving courses are demanding in their nature. SRT courses are physical and students should bear in mind that they should be able to pull up their own weight. Technical advances in equipment have, however, made this a lot easier.
As with any adventurous activities the fitter you are the more you will enjoy the activity. If you are concerned about your level of fitness please contact us and we will answer any questions.
Yes. Any course (or part payment of), private guiding day or multi activity day can be purchased as a present for somebody. If you let us know what the present is for we can send a voucher in a card.
